How To Find Unique Crib Bedding

Find crib bedding that's functional, safe and fabulous.

When it comes to picking out crib bedding, every parent wants to make their baby’s first room perfect and attractive, but the process of picking out just the right thing can be overwhelming, especially if you don’t know where to start. Below are general steps on how to get started making your nursery perfect for you and your little one.

Crib Bedding And Safety

First, you need to know what babies absolutely need (and what they absolutely do not need) in crib bedding. Infants need a mattress cover and a fitted crib sheet — period.  For warmth, put them in a onesy.  Having additional things in the crib for newborns is not only useless, it can be dangerous (see “Baby Bedding“).

At 12 months, babies are safe to use blankets. Babies do not need pillows or comforters. Other things that will now make their crib look good are a crib skirt (a dust ruffle for cribs) and a crib bumper that goes along the inside of the crib to keep babies limbs from going through the slats of the bed. Both of these are optional. All crib bedding should be made of a soft material that has a low possibility of allergic reaction, like cotton.

Tips, Tricks and Decorating Ideas With Crib Bedding

Now that you have the basics, let’s get to the fun stuff! First decide if you want to have a gender specific (boy or girl) room or if you want (or need) a room that is gender neutral. Whatever you decide, start by picking colors that fall in the category you choose. While you’re choosing these colors, though, remember that nurseries should be a welcoming place for the baby as well as for you. Picking colors you like will help make the room comfortable to you.

After you have chosen the colors you want, you can move on to the style. Do you want your child to sleep on cuddly little lambs? Or do you want a more mature style? How about an artistic room? Or do you tend to lean a little more to the non-traditional, like a rock ‘n roll theme? To decide, simply look at the style of the rest of the rooms in your home. The nursery should feel like a continuation of that style and that starts with the bedding. If you have no specific style, look into mixing and matching the crib bedding.

One thing many people won’t tell you is that buying crib bedding separates is better than buying in a set. While the sets seem cheaper, they can cost you more money in the long run because the baby’s bedding will and should be washed frequently. In order to save yourself time, you should buy multiples of each item. Crib bedding sets usually don’t include multiples of each item. Plus, the items in these sets all match. If you want an eclectic sense of style for the nursery, buying separates is the best way go.

After you have chosen the style you want, it’s time to set a budget and get shopping. If you want a matching bedding set or one that is not too unique, most retailers will probably carry what you want. If you want something that is completely unique, do an Internet search and be as specific as possible. Keep in mind, however, that you may not find exactly what you’re looking for. If you don’t, you may want to consider purchasing plain colored sheets and buying material and sewing (or hiring someone to sew) the blankets and other crib bedding you want.
